In the Berkshires and Park Slope
In the 1920’s, Joseph H. Pilates created this low-impact conditioning program. Influenced by yoga, gymnastics, skiing, self-defense, dance, circus training and weight training he created a perfect blend of strength and flexibility. When you participate in a Pilates session you will easily see all of these reflected in his work. He utilized his new method, Contrology, on his own body with tremendous results. It was after this that he began teaching others. While he was training detectives in Scotland Yard WWI broke out and due to his German heritage he was interned. During this time he worked with fellow internees, a great number of who were seriously wounded during the war. This is where his knowledge of rehabilitation began its development.
After WWI ,Joe emigrated from Germany to the United States. While on the boat he met his future wife, Clara, a trained nurse. Realizing they shared the same view on fitness they set up their studio in New York. During this time he developed a relationship with Balanchine and worked with many of his dancers. A steady following of actors, actresses, and athletes then ensued.
Joseph Pilates believed in commitment; based on the understanding that these exercises needed to be performed on a regular basis to realize results. There is no “quick fix”.
The following quote is taken directly from Joseph H. Pilates & William J. Miller’s, “A Pilates’ Primer: The Millennium Edition, Return to Life Through Contrology and Your Health," Incline Village, NV: Presentation Dynamics, 1998. [originally published in 1945]
Physical Fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. To achieve the highest accomplishments within the scope of our capabilities in all walks of life we must constantly strive to acquire strong, healthy bodies and develop our minds to the limit of our ability. This very rapidly progressing world with its ever-increasing faster tempo of living demands that we be physically fit and alert in order that we may succeed in the unceasing race with keen competition which rewards the “go-getter” but by-passes the “no-getter” (p.6)
This "rapidly progressing world" contributes to poor posture -- a result of  endless hours at a computer, excess time driving in a car,  increased stress and injury. Within a few sessions you will notice:
  • Improved Flexibility
  • Greater Strength & Muscle Tone
  • Lowered Stress Levels
  • A Flatter Stomach and Trimmer Waist
  • Better Posture
  • Decreased Incidence of Back Pain
  • Increased Bone Density
  • Greater Joint Mobility
  • Fewer Injuries
  • Improved Performance in Athletic
Pilates can also have a positive influence on the respiratory, lymphatic system.
The Art of Exercising and Beyond®
Juliu Horvath, a former dancer and Yogi, is the genius behind GYROKINESIS® and Gyrotonic methodologies. Gyrotonic methodology embraces key principles found in gymnastics, swimming, ballet and yoga  which allow the body to work in an integrated manner. The Gyrotonic method is performed on equipment designed to enhance coordination, flexibility and strength while allowing total freedom of movement. Exercises, synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, enhance aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promote neuromuscular rejuvenation.
The Gyrotonic equipment offers complete freedom of movement. It is fully adjustable to meet the needs of every body type and level of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower completely eliminates the jarring at the beginning and end of a movement found in conventional exercise equipment, where most injuries occur. A unique aspect of the Gyrotonic method is that it is relatively non-weight bearing. The equipment is built to provide assistance that gives the impression of moving in water. This quality makes it very useful for working with persons overcoming injuries as well as the elderly. In the same respect it also provides an invigorating and, at times, even aerobic movement experience. “It feels like a massage from the inside out, as if my bones are kneading the insides of my muscles” reports one client.
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is used worldwide in therapeutic, dance, sports specific and general conditioning facilities by people of all ages.
